Lesson Plans & Standards

Developing lesson plans with a global focus is critical for creating global citizens as well as helping student to understand the Sustainable Development Goals. Attaches is an example of a unit of study with a global emphasis. This is a 5th Grade Environmental Issues unit.  The complete unit overview and a sample lesson are included.

Standards

Working with standards, whether Common Core, NGSS, or your own state/district standards, is a part of teaching.  We use the standards to create and drive our lessons.  Below I have given a few examples of how to take existing standards and how you can "globalize" them.

These examples are for fifth grade, but they should help you understand how to modify your own standards.

Writing Standards

College and Career Readiness Anchor Standard:

3. Write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events using effective technique, well-chosen details, and well-structured events.

Fifth Grade Common Core Standard:

3. Write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events using effective technique, descriptive details, and clear event sequences. a. Orient the reader by establishing a situation and introducing a narrator and/or characters; organize an event sequence that unfolds naturally. b. Use narrative techniques, such as dialogue, description, and pacing, to develop experiences and events or show the responses of characters to situations. c. Use a variety of transitional words, phrases, and clauses to manage the sequence of events. d. Use concrete words and phrases and sensory details to convey experiences and events precisely. e. Provide a conclusion that follows from the narrated experiences or events.

Globalize: At least one personal narrative will include an international experience or information. For example, students will complete a Family Heritage narrative which details the family country/countries of heritage.

Globalizing any writing, whether opinion, narrative, or research/information can be globalized by adding international components such as citations or examples from issues, problems or experiences that occur outside of the United States.

Next Generation Science Standards

Engineering Design Disciplinary Core Ideas:

  • ETS1.A: Defining and Delimiting Engineering Problems

  • ETS1.B: Developing Possible Solutions

  • ETS1.C: Optimizing the Design Solution

These standards are easily adaptable. During the research portion, students can reach out internationally, using some of the links provided in the resource section, to connect with students in other countries to see how they view the problem and what possible solutions they could come up with using their unique perspective from their country.
